How long do candles last? Burn time by size and how to calculate it

The short answer: a container candle's burn time depends mostly on how much wax it holds and how fast its wick consumes that wax. Many makers estimate roughly 5–8 hours of burn time per ounce of wax for container candles, but that is a rough rule of thumb — wax type, wick size, fragrance and how the candle is burned all change the real number. The only reliable figure is one you measure.

Uses a rough 5–8 hours per ounce rule of thumb (midpoint 6.5). Not a claim for any specific candle — measure your own.

How to calculate candle burn time

Example only: a candle weighs 0.6 oz less after a 4-hour burn cycle. Its burn rate is 0.6 ÷ 4 = 0.15 oz per hour. With 8 oz of wax, estimated burn time is 8 ÷ 0.15 ≈ 53 hours — inside the rough range in the chart. Measure several cycles and average them, because the rate changes as the wax level drops. Never publish a burn time you have not tested.

CandleScience defines a burn cycle as about four hours of burning followed by cooling, in its candle making terms glossary. Use the same cycle length every time so your results are comparable.

What shortens or extends burn time

Factors that change burn time
FactorEffectWhat to do
Oversized wickBurns wax faster, larger flameTest a smaller wick size
Untrimmed wickLarger flame, faster consumption, sootTrim before every burn
DraftsUneven, faster burnBurn away from vents and fans
Very long burnsOverheating, faster consumptionFollow label burn-time limits
TunnelingWasted wax on the wallsCorrect wick size and first-burn guidance

The National Candle Association's fire safety tips advise trimming wicks and not burning candles for longer than the manufacturer recommends. Those habits protect both safety and burn time. For soot-related issues see why candles soot and wicks mushroom.

How long do unlit candles last?

Unlit candles can be kept for a long time, but fragrance and color can fade, especially with heat and sunlight. Store candles cool, dark and lidded. Many makers suggest customers enjoy scented candles within about a year for the best throw — treat that as guidance, not a hard expiration. Should you print burn time on your label?

  • Only list a burn time you have measured with your exact recipe.
  • Use an approximate range ("approx. 45–50 hours") rather than a precise number.
  • Retest after changing wax, wick, fragrance or vessel.
  • Keep the test record with the product so you can back up the claim.

Log burn tests in WaxLogic next to each product and recipe, and use the candle calculator to know exactly how much wax goes into each size.
