How to get wax out of a candle jar (4 easy methods) and reuse the jar
October 13, 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer: the easiest way to get wax out of a candle jar is the freezer method — freeze the jar for a few hours, then pop the hardened wax out with a butter knife. For soft soy wax, pour hot (not boiling) water into the jar instead; the wax floats to the top, cools, and lifts off. Then wash the jar with warm soapy water and remove the wick tab before reusing or recycling it.
4 methods compared
| Method | Best for | Time | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freezer | Paraffin and firmer waxes | 2–4 hours | Thin glass; let it warm before washing |
| Hot water | Soy and soft waxes | 30–60 minutes | Don't use boiling water on thin glass |
| Low oven | Several jars at once | 15–20 minutes | Use a lined tray; never leave unattended |
| Double boiler | Saving wax to reuse | 15–30 minutes | Hot glass; use oven mitts |
Method 1: the freezer
- Scrape out as much loose wax as you can.
- Freeze the jar for 2–4 hours until the wax shrinks and hardens.
- Insert a butter knife at the edge and pop the wax out.
- Let the jar return to room temperature before washing to avoid thermal shock.
Method 2: hot water
- Place the jar on a towel in the sink.
- Fill with hot tap water or water that has cooled from boiling, leaving room at the top.
- Wait until the wax melts, floats and hardens on top.
- Lift the wax disk out, pour away the water, and wipe the residue.
Do not pour wax down the drain — it can harden in pipes. Let it set and throw it away or save it.
Removing the wick tab and residue
Pry the metal wick tab off with a butter knife once the wax is gone. A little cooking oil or rubbing alcohol on a paper towel removes waxy film, then wash with warm soapy water. Soaking in warm water helps lift paper labels.
Fictional estimates for one 8 oz jar; waiting time not included. Your time will vary by wax and jar.

Ways to reuse candle jars
- Refill it as a new candle — measure the fill weight first with the candle calculator.
- Use it for cotton balls, pens, makeup brushes or succulents.
- Offer customers a jar-return or refill discount program.
- Recycle glass where your local program accepts it — the U.S. EPA's guide to recycling common recyclables explains glass basics. Remove wax first.
Running refills? Track returned jars as a supply in WaxLogic, and check the jar fill-weight guide so refilled candles get the right amount of wax.
